Open G tuningD G D G B D
Open G tunes the guitar to a G major chord: D G D G B D. It's one of the most famous open tunings in rock, blues and slide guitar.
From standard, lower the 6th, 5th and 1st strings a whole step. The 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings stay in standard.
Some players remove the 6th string entirely when playing in Open G, so the lowest note is the root G on the 5th string.

Tuning your guitar to Open G
- 1
Allow microphone access when your browser asks. The audio is analysed on your device and never uploaded.
- 2
Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. The tuner detects which string you're playing.
- 3
If the needle is left of centre the string is flat, so tighten it. If it's right of centre the string is sharp, so loosen it.
- 4
Turn the peg slowly until the note turns green and the needle sits in the middle. Then move on to the next string.
- 5
Go round once more: tuning one string slightly changes the tension on the others.
