Tuning your violin

Automatically with the microphone, or by ear: tap any note on the headstock to hear a real recorded reference.
  1. 1

Allow microphone access and hold the violin close to your device.

  2. 2

Start with the A string. Pluck it or bow a long, steady note.

  3. 3

Use the fine tuners on the tailpiece for small corrections. Use the pegs only when a string is far out, turning gently while pushing the peg in.

  4. 4

Tune D, G and E the same way, then check the A again.

Questions & troubleshooting

What are the notes of violin strings?
The violin is tuned G D A E, from the lowest (thickest) string to the highest. Each string is a perfect fifth above the one below it.
Should I use the pegs or the fine tuners?
Use the fine tuners for anything within a few cents. The pegs are for bigger changes, such as a new string or a violin that's far out of tune.
What frequency should the A string be?
The A string is A4, 440 Hz by default. Some orchestras tune slightly higher, at 442 Hz; you can change the reference pitch in the tuner settings.
