While you play, an arrow on the peg shows which way to turn it. Machine heads vary, so if the note moves the wrong way, turn the other way.

Tuning your guitar

Automatically with the microphone, or by ear: tap any note on the headstock to hear a real recorded reference.
  1. 1

Allow microphone access when your browser asks. The audio is analysed on your device and never uploaded.

  2. 2

Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. The tuner detects which string you're playing.

  3. 3

If the needle is left of centre the string is flat, so tighten it. If it's right of centre the string is sharp, so loosen it.

  4. 4

Turn the peg slowly until the note turns green and the needle sits in the middle. Then move on to the next string.

  5. 5

Go round once more: tuning one string slightly changes the tension on the others.

Questions & troubleshooting

What are the notes of the guitar strings?
In standard tuning the six strings are E A D G B E, from the thickest (6th) string to the thinnest (1st). A common way to remember it is “Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie”.
What frequency is each guitar string?
At A4 = 440 Hz: low E is 82.41 Hz, A is 110.00 Hz, D is 146.83 Hz, G is 196.00 Hz, B is 246.94 Hz and high E is 329.63 Hz.
Should I tune up or down to a note?
Tune up to the note. If a string is sharp, loosen it slightly below the note and then bring it back up. The string and the gears then hold their tension better and stay in tune longer.
Does this tuner work for electric and acoustic guitar?
Yes. The tuner listens through your microphone, so it works with acoustic, electric, classical and 12-string guitars. For an unplugged electric, hold the guitar close to the microphone.
